The forest collection is the start of a series of shoots based in the beautiful rain forest of Mt Warning which is on the outskirts of my home town in Murwillumbah.

Forest Warrior Twins:

There is always such a buzz of excitement in the air for a fantasy shoot. The creativity, the team, the look and theme etc, I love the transformations of a creative fantasy shoot and I love the process. I am extremely lucky to work alongside some of the most talented creative artist in the area and I’m also very lucky to call them friends.

Erin my good friend and go to hairstylist, said she knew two gorgeous nature loving twin sisters and thought they would be perfect for a shoot. I wanted to create a series set around the rain forest so we started putting ideas together. Once an idea forms I like to always start with an inspiration board, this not only helps with the vision of the shoot but give the team a basic idea of what we are going for. I use many elements from hair and make-up images to help inspire the look or a particular costume or colour, even a location or a style of nail polish etc but it all comes together in the end to create something magical.

Here is where I get to rave about my awesome team. The beauty team; Erin on hair and Amanda on make-up. I have worked along side these 2 girls for many years and they are amazing at what they do. The way I work is; have idea tell Erin and Amanda and then they bring their talent and creativity to the forefront and bam…the perfect look. These amazing women always impress and blow me away. Love them and their talent.

Laurence my assistant/friend/pseudo daughter. This chicky is awesome and one of the best assistants I have ever had. This girl knows how to rock a reflector and is more then happy to climb, get in the water, fetch, carry ect. Oh and she also makes awesome props for me too like the warrior staffs in the shoot; she did such a great job on these, they were the perfect accessory for the look. Lachlan…I have not worked with him before but I cant wait to work with him again. This man is talent behind the camera. I LOVE the video he put together it sums up this incredible day perfectly.

Once everyone has arrived and the team has set up the first thing I try to get is a before shot of the models. I love this as it showcases the sometimes extreme change into the character. By this time I’m on my 3rd coffee, everyone is chatting, snacking and I’ve started taking a few behind the scenes shots, Erin and Amanda are doing their thing and Lachlan has started filming. He has set up his go pro pointed at Amanda doing make-up and it looks amazing to watch. From hair and makeup to getting into costume was about 2 and a half hours. I want to take a moment to tell you about these amazing costumes….

Wow…just WOW!!! when I was trying to look for the perfect outfits for the shoot I searched for quite a long time. I tried a few local places but I was unsuccessful at securing any so I headed to etsy to see what I could find. Enter Raellene aka Allure Collection: I saw a pair of arm cuffs that I thought would be perfect for my warriors so I thought I would take a chance and messaged her. When I saw her other work on Facebook and I felt it would be ideal for my shoot.. So I mentioned to Raellene that I was looking for some one to provide costumes for the warrior shoot and she said yes..yay… I was so darn excited.

We chatted for awhile about what I wanted and she brought some awesome ideas to the table and started to create 2 outfits specifically designed for the forest warrior shoot. Just to give you a time reference this was in April 2016. Creating and organising such a shoot takes time, energy and effort and its so worth it. So over the next few months she worked on the outfits. As they were a short skirt and top combination we all felt it was best to wait till summer to actually book in a date for the shoot. I would just like to mention that trying to organise a date that a whole team is available is not an easy task..we managed to book in the 11-12-16 and here we are….back to the shoot day 🙂

I took a couple of shots in the studio before we head out to the location, unfortunately Erin had to love and leave us at that point but the rest of the team climbed into a cars and we headed off to Mt Warning. From here on out we trekked about in the rainforest, took photos and video’d, got eaten by mozzies and had a blast playing among the undergrowth and huge trees of this wondrous location.

Please don’t forget to watch Lachlan’s amazing video, share this blog and comment below.

Forest warrior twins - getting-ready-1

Laurence: Assistant: I have assisted Katrina on many shoots and this is by far a top favourite for me. Katrina also asked me to make the two warrior staff for the models made from sticks from around my home. I wanted them to look real as possible; so my choice was to used brown shoe wax to give them their unique look, as well as adorning them with strips of leather and feathers. I am really happy with how they came up and they look great in the images.

Was such a great day. The makeup artist, hairstylist, videographer and models arrived and the the creation began. We ate, laughed and bonded over coffee. We headed to the rain forest and as it was dark I was on hand with the reflector to ensure the models had light in all the right places. Katrina is a fantastic friend and her imagination is what makes these shoots memorable. Can’t wait for the next fantasy shoot!

Forest warrior twins - getting-ready-2

Erin: Hair Stylist: After meeting Hayley and Roxy our set of twins and with their love for for nature I discussed with Katrina about having a twins shoot on location with them and we decided to make it big. Once we started brainstorming feathers, leather, rainforest and bare feet the ideas started flooding in for hair. Small details like braiding with leather and feathers through it and contrast of sleek but messy off the face to complement the bold makeup and the detail in the outfits made sure it all came together perfectly. Such a fun shoot with a team that seemed like they were fitted from the very start the photos and video showcase perfectly how much fun we had all playing together in the studio to get such a mind blowing result for the end product – these images and the videography make me feel so proud to have been a part of this.

Forest warrior twins -getting-ready-3

Amanda: Makeup Artist: I had such and amazing day working with everyone for this shoot. Katrina is so talented at what she does. Although I had an idea of what I wanted to do with the makeup, Katrina helped guide me a bit to make it that much more amazing. We wanted a true fierce warrior look which I think we achieved, especially with how everything else came together with hair, the twins and the shoot itself!

Allure Collection: Costumes: What a pleasure it was to be able to work with Katrina Cram. When Katrina had contacted me through Etsy to make some Leather Cuffs for a photoshoot, I never expected that I was going to be making the entire Warrior Women costumes. All I could think was WOW!!! My heart was racing my thoughts of creations were running wild. I was so excited to work on this that the very next day I had a mock up ready for Katrina to see. It was awesome to know that what she envisaged I had created.
After seeing the final work, I was truly amazed to see my leather creations come to life. The models fulfilled the role beautifully. The landscape was breathtaking. Katrina had pulled together a remarkable team. Katrina had collaborated such a wonderful piece of work. Such craft was use in all details to complete this piece. To be a part of this, I could realise how much work goes on behind the scene that doesn’t get acknowledged enough. Congratulations a job well done!

Lachlan: Videographer: The journey of a photoshoot is a fascinating transformation. From the careful assembly of the look, the fiery capture of those precious moments, right through to the polish of each individual image. Each element is a skillful work unto itself. Being able to film that journey is always an exciting undertaking. Particularly when working with such a great team like that which Katrina had assembled. From the ‘burbs of Murwillumbah to the roots of Mt Warning, capturing each practitioner honing their craft, striving for the perfect shot, was a thrilling task. In a way, the ferocity and wild nature of the ‘fantasy warrior’ theme is an abstract realisation of the creative process. Poised and then frenetic. Composed and then exuberant. A wonderful morning with wonderful people resulting in some distinct and special images.

{Urban Tropicana – Floral Bikini Creation}

A floral bikini with an urban tropicana feel was the inspiration behind this stunning creation by floral artist Julia Rose. Vivid colours of pink, orange and green helped to emphasis the theme. DRAGDOLL Cosmetics with Chelsi Hair + Makeup

{DRAGDOLL Cosmetics with Chelsi Hair + Makeup}

I had the privilege to photography this talented woman’s creative styling and her DRAGDOLL cosmetics a couple of times now here in my studio. It’s always a lot of fun with Chelsi and her team. One of the shoots was with a camera friendly snake as it was not the fist time I had worked with snakes before I loved it as the snake added great texture to complemented Chelsi’s creative styling with the makeup.

Wanting to branch out to create a unique & professional space catering for everybody and that being the driving force behind this 20 year old hair and makeup artist’s business; Chelsi who specialises in all hair services, technique cutting & colouring, specialised makeup SFX and hair extensions is the owner/operator of two hairdressing salons in Tugun QLD and Kingscliff NSW along with her vegan cosmetics range – DRAGDOLL.

Starting with a hairdressing apprenticeship Chelsi then moved on to a diploma of specialised makeup and has now been in the business for six years.

I asked Chelsi what did she find most challenging about your job?

“Always finding the next thing that can make your service totally different and impressive to the standard.” was her reply.

Chelsi runs her business full time and loves having the opportunity to make people feel sexy on the inside & outside she says.

I asked Chelsi what made you decide to utilise my photography services? she said:

“Katrina & I did a collaboration together, I loved the images so I continued to use her skills to promote my business & cosmetics line. I highly recommend working with Katrina, especially for studio shoots. Her set up is professional, spacious & she provides top quality work.”

Lady in Red

Lady in Red

When asked what looks she wanted this budding young model replied with “something fashion like” for her second look she decided to leave it up to us.

I have said it before and I will say it again, I have the privileged to work with some of the most talented artist in our beautiful area and for this shoot my team consisted of the ever talented Amanda (make up artist) and Kendal  (hair stylist).

For Paige’s shoot I wanted to show 2 sides of her and thought having 2 completely opposite looks would be a lot of fun but keeping both looks with a fashion feel.

Look 1: A sleek natural minimalistic studio session

Look 2: A red theme based on big messy hair and bold makeup and of course lots and lots of red fabric, 6 meters in fact.

About the Model Paige Sundell:

I’m 21 and have been modelling since I was 16, I love that modelling allows me to be someone else for the day I love the transformations and the confidence it give me. At present I am signed with Reeder model management.

I love both my looks but look two was incredible, so much time went into the hair and make up which looked amazing, having material fashioned into a dress was something I have never I have never worked with before so it was a great experience. I really enjoyed myself during the shoot I would have to say that it was one of the best I have done so far, it was a lot of fun.

The thing I love the most about creative shoots is the finished product. There is so much time put into them it and it shows, the end products look awesome. I loved working with Katrina she made me feel very comfortable in front of the camera all of her ideas for the shoot were awesome and creative. I would recommend her to anyone wanting creative images for their portfolio.  She is great to work with.

About the Makeup artist Amanda Larsen Makeup Artistry:

I have only been doing makeup for about 3 years now. I started in Vancouver, Canada and then decided to make the move to Australia I love working with such talented and inspirational people. Also the creativity behind it all, I love seeing the reactions of my clients after a makeover.

I loved doing this shoot. Doing two completely different looks in different locations, one being in studio and the other on location, it was a lot of fun. I love doing creative shoots because you get to step out of your comfort zone a little bit and be a little messy. I love being able to transform someone into a look that tells a story and working with a team that can make that happen.

Katrina is an amazing person and photographer to work with. She has great ideas and when she gets an idea in her head she makes sure to find a way for it to come to life for her to capture it!

You can find me on Facebook at Amanda Larsen Makeup Artistry and on Instagram under: amandasmobile_makeup

About the Hair stylist Kendal Watts:

I have been hairdressing now for 10years now and my favorite part of my job would be the creativity and being able to completely change someone’s look by something simple as a blowdry or to a avant guard fantasy look. This year I plan on entering the Australian hairdresser journal awards (AHJA) I wold love to win one of these awards, so fingers crossed.

I loved the shoot we did there were two completely different looks, the model was great and looked stunning in both. I thought this shoot, it was lots of fun! It was taken in the studio then on location. It was amazing to see the look have such an effect being shot in a deserted quarry. I love creative shoots because it’s fun to step out of the salon and get play and style hair for looks you don’t get to create everyday.

Working with Katrina was great! She is an amazing photographer, fun to work with and really knows how to get amazing shots.

The hair for look 1: For the hair I did a sleeked back low bun. I achieved this by pulling the hair back into a low pony tail then separated the pony tail into two, then with one section I back combed the hair all the way so it made like a padding then I pinned that into shape for the bun with the remaining hair I wrapped that around the padding to create a smooth low bun.
The makeup for look 1: I used very minimal makeup to make the model look natural. I did a bit of contouring to enhance her facial structures.

The hair for look 2: For look two I went for a smoothed out root with tight Afro curl on the ends complete opposite from roots to ends a avant guard look , this was achieved by smoothing out the root putting in a center part then by using the rounded ends of two coat hangers to create a long u shape I then wrapped the hair in a figure 8 around the hangers crimped over it with a GHD straightener to heat the hair around the hanger once cooled it creates a tight zig zag shape that I brushed out to create massive volume on the ends.
The makeup for look 2: The second look was an avant grade look which was really fun to do. I first blockec out the models freckles, including her arms and chest. I then did really heavy contouring in red under her cheekbones and dark smokey eye with red lips to finish the look.

The Creation of a Fantasy

The Creation of a Fantasy

I have been creating fantasy portraits for clients since 2001. I remember how it all started: I awoke one night and could not get back to sleep so…I started thinking. Thinking about my new venture into photography and thought I needed to do something different – Dress ups for grown ups! Why not? Children get to dress up all the time and play pretend so why cant we!…The idea was planted but did not become another reality for a couple of years.

My first fantasy looks ever were inspired by the artist John William Waterhouse and they were – Circe the Greek goddess/sorceress and Ophelia from William Shakespeare’s  play Hamlet.

I now have an amazing team of extremely talented women who help me transform individuals into fantasy characters. Since my first photo shoot we have transformed people into an array of characters such as: Fairy’s and mermaids, Gothic beauties and vampires + many many more.

My entire team LOVE creating fantasy characters.

The process! it is an early start…a very EARLY start (depending on your chosen look) you start your experience in the hands of our talented Make up artist and Hair stylist while I run around and make coffee and tea’s for everyone and start photographing the amazing process. Hair and Make up is an art in itself and can take anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours of amazing creation.

Then its time to get dressed.

Depending on the package chosen. your costume has been tailored for your chosen creative look.  I have machine sewn, hand stitched, pinned and gathered and enlisted some help from talented friends to make the perfect costume for you or supplied by you.

The big reveal.

Once all is done and we are ready to head off,  we close your eyes and stand you in front of a mirror. This is my favorite moment …..We don’t let you see yourself till your creative look is complete with hair make up and costume. I love the reaction of people. I have had ‘Oh my god! I look like a vampire’   ‘Wow!’  I’ve even had tears of joy. Each creative look we do is unique no two looks are the same.

On location.

My turn! creating imagery, immortalising you on film so they say. I help direct you so I can capture the essence of your character while making sure your personality shines through. The shoot will go for about 2-4 hours depending on the look and locations and how many looks we are doing. The most creative looks I have done in one day was 7 – that was an all-dayer from sun up to sun down. My job does not end there. Editing magic! and the end product is amazing with a unique portfolio for you to keep for ever.

I get asked by many people why would someone want to do all this? My answer is always ‘Why Not?’ everyone needs to spoil themselves and do something different. We all need to relax be pampered and have fun – why not a fantasy portrait shoot?

Fantasy portrait photography is for anyone and everyone. Women, men, teens, children, couples,  families and pregnancy fantasy.

The following photos were taken using my first SLR camera the Pentax k1000 on 200 speed kodak film, I have scanned the film negatives so I am able to share these with you and from these simple beginnings are the images that started it all…enjoy 🙂
